Chelsea hero Frank Lampard linked with surprise move to join Jose Mourinho’s former club as manager: Reports
Chelsea legend Frank Lampard is in the running for the AS Roma job, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport. The Italian club could be on the hunt for a new manager following a poor start to the season.
Ivan Juric took charge at the Stadio Olimpico in September, replacing Daniele De Rossi. However, Juric has struggled to impress, with the Giallorossi losing four of their 10 games under him.
Roma have apparently begun their search for their next manager and Frank Lampard is among the names being considered. The Englishman has been out of a job since his interim reign with Chelsea in 2023.
Paulo Sousa, however, is the frontrunner for the hot seat at the Stadio Olimpico. The Portuguese manager is currently in charge of UAE Pro League side Shabab Al Ahli, and the Serie A giants have reportedly contacted his entourage to discuss a deal.
Roma have also been in touch with former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini and former Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri. However, Lampard is also on their radar.
The Friedkin Group, who won a majority stake in the Italian club, are already in talks to acquire Everton. The staff at Goodison Park have apparently advised them to consider the English manager, who had a one-year stint with the Toffees.
Should Lampard be selected for the role, he will be following in the footsteps of former Chelsea and AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho. The two of them enjoyed great success together at Stamford Bridge. Lampard played 215 matches under Mourinho, scoring 71 goals and providing 59 assists.
What is Frank Lampard's managerial record with Chelsea?
Frank Lampard initially took charge at Chelsea in the summer of 2019. The Blues had parted ways with Maurizio Sarri that summer and opted to put their trust on their club legend.
Unfortunately, Lampard failed to live up to the billing at Stamford Bridge. He ultimately lost the job in January 2021 following a 3-1 win over Luton Town in the FA Cup.
The Englishman registered 44 wins from 84 games in charge, losing 25, and registered a 52.4 percent win ratio. Thomas Tuchel was announced as his replacement, with the German taking over the following day.
Lampard, meanwhile, spent a year with Everton but was back at Chelsea in April 2023, albeit as caretaker manager following Graham Potter's dismissal. Lampard registered just one win in 11 games, losing eight others, before leaving that summer.
Mauricio Pochettino took over the Blues next and he has since been replaced by Enzo Maresca this summer.
