Chelsea make approach to sign 20-year-old Argentine footballer: Reports
Chelsea have entered the race to sign Argentine defender Agustin Giay. According to journalist Rudy Galetti, the Blues want to add the 20-year-old right-back, who plays for San Lorenzo.
Giay is a versatile option who has played both as a right-sided midfielder and a right-back. Aged just 20, he has already made 84 appearances for the senior side. He has made 20 appearances this season, bagging two assists.
He has also played for Argentina's youth teams, featuring for the U-16 and U-20 sides. He captained the side in the U-20 World Cup last year as La Albiceleste suffered an exit in the Round of 16 at the hands of Nigeria.
Chelsea already have Reece James and Malo Gusto as options at right-back. However, the former has struggled with regular injury issues, missing almost the entire 2023-24 campaign.
Gusto stepped in admirably during the entirety of the campaign but Mauricio Pochettino had to resort to using centre-backs like Axel Disasi and Trevoh Chalobah at right-back in his absence. Thus, bringing in another option could be a smart deal for the London side.
Former Chelsea star opens up on Mauricio Pochettino's tenure
Former Chelsea attacker Eden Hazard expressed sympathy for Mauricio Pochettino following the Argentinian's exit from the club. The Belgian star went on to wish him luck for the future, saying (via talkSPORT):
“I was a bit sad, to be fair. I think that he did a great job. I know that people want Chelsea to be in the top four but it’s just a season of transition. He’s a great manager, I wish him good luck and let’s see who is going to be there in the future."
Having parted ways with Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter last season, the Blues looked for an appointment keeping the long-term development of their players in mind. Pochettino, who has had experience with a young squad and in the Premier League, profiled as a great option and eventually took up the reins at Stamford Bridge.
A difficult start to the campaign saw Chelsea find themselves in the bottom half in December. However, they finished strong, capping the season off with five wins in a row in the league that saw them finish sixth and secure European qualification. Thus, it came as a surprise to many when the club announced that they would be parting ways with the ex-Tottenham boss.
