Chelsea and Manchester United join Liverpool in race for Euro 2024 star - Reports
Chelsea and Manchester United have reportedly entered the race to sign Liverpool target Anthony Gordon. The Newcastle United star is said to be attracting interest now after a move to Anfield collapsed last month.
As per a report in Caught Offside, Chelsea and Manchester United are exploring the option of signing Gordon this summer. The Englishman was offered to Liverpool by Newcastle United, with the Reds keen on signing him.
However, the Magpies wanted Jarell Quansah in return, forcing the Merseyside club, who did not want to part ways with the young star, to walk away from the deal. Moreover, Newcastle United were also said to be keen on getting the deal through before June 30 to help with PSR regulations.
Chelsea and Manchester United will reportedly need to offer £75 million to convince Newcastle.
Chelsea and Manchester United target hints at being a Liverpool fan
Anthony Gordon was at Everton before he joined Newcastle United. However, he has repeatedly hinted in recent interviews that he is a Liverpool fan.
Speaking to Gary Neville in April this year, the Chelsea and Manchester United target stated that Steven Gerrard was his hero growing up. He added that the midfielder was like a God in Liverpool and heaped praise on the legendary Englishman (via talkSPORT):
“Steven Gerrard was my football hero growing up. Coming from L'pool, he was like a God in L'pool, and he was unbelievable player.”
Gordon went on to name Mohamed Salah as one of his current inspirations and added:
“My confidence comes from my preparation. Some footballers like to think less, just turn up and play and trust their instincts. I just love the mindset of getting myself in that place before I'm already there. I saw Mo Salah talk about it – that's where I took even more interest, because I see him as an absolute machine and a winner. People like that, you're not going to go too far wrong following what they do.”
While talking to Channel 4, Gordon named Anfield as his favorite stadium after St James' Park. He said:
"Other than St. James’, it’s Anfield by far. Maybe it’s because I’m from the city and grew up watching it but I just think before the game when they sing YNWA, it’s top, top level.”
Though picked in the squad, Gordon has not managed to get into the England starting XI at EURO 2024. Phil Foden has kept his place at the left wing despite calls from pundits and fans to move or drop the Manchester City star.
