Chelsea ready to activate €55m clause in Euro 2024 star's contract this summer - Reports
Chelsea are reportedly preparing to trigger the €55 million release clause in Nico Williams' contract while the Spanish winger impresses at Euro 2024. The Athletic Bilbao forward is on the radar of several European giants this summer.
Sky Sport Italia reports that the Blues want to bring Williams to Stamford Bridge and make him one of Enzo Maresca's summer signings. The 21-year-old was excellent last season, posting eight goals and 19 assists in 37 games across competitions.
Williams was Player of the Match in Spain's 1-0 win against Italy in Group B of Euro 2024. He made four key passes, created one big chance, and also hit the woodwork.
Chelsea are turning their attention to Williams after missing out on Michael Olise. The Crystal Palace winger has opted to join Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich over the Blues.
Williams is a regular starter for Spain at Euro 2024 in their wins against Croatia (3-0) and Italy. He has also been linked with La Liga giants Barcelona but played down suggestions he would leave Bilbao:
"I’ve just signed a new deal at Athletic a few weeks ago, I feel very good there. I’m very happy at Athletic. It’s very strange to receive questions on my future."
Williams' new deal expires in three years, but his future is the subject of intense speculation. The Pamplona-born attacker joined Bilbao's youth system in 2013 and has been with the Basque club since.
Chelsea are reportedly also interested in LOSC Lille's Jonathan David
Chelsea's summer transfer window has started, and they appear eager to bolster their attack. They are setting their sights on a new winger, with Williams seemingly their new target after failing to win the Olise race.
Jonathan David is also on the Blues' wishlist. The Canadian striker could provide competition for Nicolas Jackson. They have reportedly held talks with his representatives about a potential deal.
The Lille frontman was in fine form last season, registering 26 goals and nine assists in 47 games across competitions. He finished second in Ligue 1's Golden Boot race last season with 19 in 34 games.
David, 24, has a year left on his contract and the two clubs hold a good relationship. Chelsea could sign the 48-cap Canada international at a reasonable price. He's representing his nation at Copa America but could be on the move this summer.
