Erling Haaland wants clause added to new Manchester City contract as he eyes Barcelona or Real Madrid move - Reports

Manchester City forward Erling Haaland is reportedly eyeing a potential move to Spain, where he could play for Real Madrid or Barcelona. To improve the certainty of such a move, the 24-year-old has reportedly requested a new clause added to his upcoming contract.

Haaland's current contract with the club is set to run until 2027. This contract has a release clause of €200 million that reportedly came into effect in the summer. The Athletic (via Football Transfers) claimed that this clause was in place for clubs outside the Premier League.

The massive amount will make it near impossible for any European giant to make a move for Haaland. It is believed that the clause will decrease intermittently, coming down to €175 million by the summer of 2025, and going even lower by 2026.

However, even when lowered substantially, Erling Haaland's release clause remains quite high, and the forward is hoping to change this in his new contract. According to a report from MARCA (via Football Transfers), he wants a much bigger deduction in his release clause. This would make it easier for clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona to afford his services.

It is uncertain how Manchester City, where he has scored 97 goals and provided 14 assists in 102 games, will react to his request for a heavily subsidized release clause. He has been in brilliant form this season, scoring seven goals in their first three games of the season, and they will likely hope to keep him at the Etihad Stadium for longer.

When Erling Haaland's agent spoke about Real Madrid dream

Erling Haaland has since been linked to a move to Spain, where he could join Real Madrid or Barcelona. Back in 2023, his agent Rafaela Pimenta revealed how much of a dream playing at the Santiago Bernabeu was to players in her agency.

She also compared Los Blancos to the Premier League during an interview in London, when she said (via Eurosport)"

"There is the Premier League, and there is Real Madrid, and Real Madrid has something of its own that makes it the dreamland for the players. Madrid keeps this magic going. It doesn’t have the league competition but it does have the Champions League.
"In my agency, we try to make a plan. We have to make a plan. We need to have a goal. Maybe we won’t achieve it but if we don’t know where we’re going, for sure we don’t get there."

What this could mean for Erling Haaland's future at Manchester City is uncertain.
