Ex-Champions League winner at Chelsea could return as part of Enzo Maresca’s staff if deal goes through: Reports
Chelsea could reportedly see former goalkeeper Willy Caballero return to Stamford Bridge as part of incoming manager Enzo Maresca's staff. This comes with reports that the current Leicester City manager, who led the Foxes back into the Premier League, could be the next manager of West London's biggest club.
Maresca is widely reported to be leading the race for the seat in the Blues dugout, following Mauricio Pochettino's exit from the club. There have been several potential candidates, including Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna and Brentford boss Thomas Frank.
Reports from The Daily Mail (via Sport Bible) have revealed that Chelsea will pay Leicester City a compensation of £10 million to sign Maresca. This could see a former player Willy Caballero, who won the Champions League and the Europa League with the Blues, join him at the Bridge.
After playing for Southampton, Caballero decided to enter coaching, joining up with Maresca at Leicester City as the assistant manager in July 2023. Now, the former goalkeeper could have the opportunity to coach the players in his former club and hopefully bring his Champions League-winning experience to the fore.
Chelsea legend sad to see Mauricio Pochettino leave Stamford Bridge
Chelsea legend Eden Hazard has revealed that he was “a bit sad" to hear the club parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine manager and the West London club parted ways at the end of the season after a mixed campaign only saw them secure Conference League football for the next season.
Speaking with TALKSPORT, the retired Belgian forward said (via Fotmob):
"I was a bit sad, I think he did a great job. I know people want Chelsea to be in the top four but it’s a season of transition. He's a great manager. I wish him good luck and let's see who is going to be there in the future.”
The Blues look set to appoint Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca in the coming days to replace the former Saints boss. Hazard will hope his former side can return to competing at the top end of the table next campaign.
The retired Belgian winger was easily one of the best-ever players at Stamford Bridge. He led their attack from 2014 till 2019, ending his final season at the club with 16 goals and 15 assists in 37 Premier League games. He notably won every trophy with the club, except the UEFA Champions League.
