German coach interested in replacing Gareth Southgate as England boss: Reports

Thomas Tuchel is reportedly interested in succeeding Gareth Southgate as England manager after the latter resigned. The German tactician is out of management after parting ways with Bayern Munich.

BILD's Christian Falk reports that Tuchel is a candidate for the Three Lions managerial vacancy. He has wanted to take a one-year sabbatical, but the job appeals to him.

Tuchel was linked with the England job three years ago amid criticism Gareth Southgate was receiving at Euro 2020. He left Bayern earlier this summer after a disappointing reign in charge at the Allianz Arena.

Gareth Southgate has stepped down as Three Lions boss after failing to guide his nation to Euro 2024 glory. His troops made it to the final in Germany but suffered a 2-1 defeat to Spain at the Olympastadion in Berlin.

There was speculation that Southgate would depart regardless of the outcome of the final, and he has decided to. Several other names have been linked with replacing him, including Graham Potter, Eddie Howe, and Mauricio Pochettino.

However, Tuchel has a fine resume in English football after guiding Chelsea to UEFA Champions League glory in 2021. He oversaw 63 wins in 100 games in charge at Stamford Bridge before being somewhat surprisingly sacked in September 2022. There's a sense he has unfinished business on English shores.

Tuchel touched on a potential return to England when speaking last season amid links to Chelsea and Manchester United. Neither of those Premier League giants ended up securing his appointment, with the Blues replacing Pochettino with Enzo Maresca and the Red Devils keeping Erik ten Hag.

The former Borussia Dortmund coach admitted he loved his time in charge at Stamford Bridge:

"I’d rather not answer but it is no secret that I loved it at Chelsea, I loved it in England and I loved it in the Premier League for sure."

Tuchel admits he felt more appreciated in England than in Germany, especially during his Bayern reign. He was heavily criticized for the Bavarians' nosedive which saw them end last season trophyless for the first time since 2012.

The former PSG boss worked with Three Lions captain Harry Kane and got the best out of him. The prolific frontman bagged 44 goals and 12 assists in 45 games across competitions, the best return of his career.
