German police stopped major terror attack on England fans by IS supporters before Euro 2024 final: Reports

An attack on England fans by IS supporters was reportedly thwarted by the German police before the Euro 2024 final. The Three Lions faced off against Spain that night (July 14), as they succumbed to their second consecutive final loss in the European championships.

Nico Williams opened the scoring only to see his goal cancelled out by substitute Cole Palmer. However, Mikel Oyarzabal gave his side a winner four minutes from time and ensured that La Roja lifted the trophy.

Although the match appeared to go through smoothly enough, The Sun claims that three suspects were detained by the German police hours before kick-off (via SPORTbible). It is believed that the trio were already under the surveillance of the special forces after being deemed to be IS supporters.

As per the report, it is believed that a plot to target England fans emerged, and as a result, such action was necessary. Speaking about this, a spokesperson from the Berlin police said (via SPORTbible):

"The homes of three men were searched in three addresses in Potsdam. Forces from special task forces were involved in the operation. The measures were carried out in connection with an immediate threat from the Islamist spectrum."

Although the report claims that these three men were released, they continue to be under investigation.

A major topic of conversation during Euro 2024 was around Gareth Southgate's future as England manager. The English coach confirmed that he would be stepping down from the role after the tournament's completion.

Southgate came under fire for his lackluster style of football despite taking the Three Lions to the finals of Euro 2024. While announcing his resignation, he said (via ESPN):

"As a proud Englishman, it has been the honor of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all."
"But i's time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday's final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as manager."

Although Southgate chose to step down, reports claimed that the FA wanted to continue with the 53-year-old till the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Southgate took charge of the Three Lions in September 2016 and managed 102 matches across competitions, winning 61, drawing 24 and losing 17.
