Harry Maguire makes decision regarding Manchester United future following Ruben Amorim appointment - Reports
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has reportedly decided on his future at Old Trafford following Ruben Amorim's appointment as the new manager. The highly-regarded young manager will officially take charge on November 11, with Ruud van Nistelrooy as interim manager until then.
As reported by TBR Football, Harry Maguire hopes to revive his career at Old Trafford under Amorim who usually deploys a 3-4-3 formation. He has been a success for England over the years, particularly in a three-at-the-back system, and fancies his chances under Amorim.
Maguire has arguably been a disappointing signing for Manchester United, especially considering his £80 million price tag, a record fee for a defender. Expectations were massive from the Englishman when he was signed from Leicester City in 2019 but he has been unable to live up to them.
The centre-back has struggled for consistency during his time at Old Trafford and also garnered a reputation for being error-prone. He also lost his captaincy under Erik ten Hag but has refused to leave the club on multiple occasions.
The 31-year-old has his current deal expiring in the summer of 2025 and the Red Devils have so far not shown any interest in offering him a renewal. However, he is understood to be desperate to convince the club to offer him a new deal.
Maguire reportedly believes that he could become a key player under Ruben Amorim in a three-at-the-back system. The former Hull City defender has made 215 appearances for Manchester United, winning two trophies in the process.
Jamie Carragher names two players who cannot play together under newly-appointed Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has said that the duo of Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt cannot play together under new Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese manager has been successful at Sporting CP using a 3-4-3 system and is widely expected to line up in the same formation at Old Trafford.
However, pundit Jamie Carragher has claimed that Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt cannot play together in a three-at-the-back system. He told Sky Sports:
“I actually think Martínez in this position, I’ve mentioned this before, it might suit him [as he] gives you that balance with a left foot. I can’t see De Ligt or Maguire being in the wide positions; they can’t."
The former Liverpool defender added:
"They will not be able to cope. So, I don’t think De Ligt or Maguire could play in the same back three because whoever was in the wide position will get really exposed.”
Carragher also claimed that Manchester United's summer addition Leny Yoro could fit in well alongside Martinez and de Ligt. He added:
“Now, Yoro, coming in as a young player, he’s a project for the club. You’d want to work with him, get him in, young player, probably can deal with maybe the pace down the sides of it as well. So, but they’ve got the numbers if there’s injuries or suspensions, we know they’ve got that."
Manchester United will be up against Leicester City in the Premier League on Sunday, November 10 after taking on PAOK in the Europa League in midweek. Ruben Amorim will take charge on Monday, November 11.
