Ligue 1 club reach agreement in principle with Manchester United over deal to sign Mason Greenwood - Reports

Marseille have reportedly reached an agreement in principle with Manchester United star Mason Greenwood. The Ligue 1 side are now said to be working to finalize the deal before holding the medical.

As per a report by David Ornstein from The Athletic, Marseille reached an agreement with Manchester United last week and have now agreed on personal terms with the attacker. The two sides agreed on a €31.6 million fee, with €4 million of it in add-ons.

The French side have also handed the Red Devils a big sell-on clause as per Ornstein. Roberto De Zerbi, the new Marseille manager also commented on Greenwood and said in a press conference earlier this month (via GOAL):

"Mason is a world class player but we have not recruited him yet. I don't know what happened, but I am not used to get involved in my players' private life. But if he comes here, you have to know that I treat all my players like my sons. I can tell them off in private, but I would never attack them in public."

Lazio, Juventus, Benfica and Borussia Dortmund reportedly remain interested in signing Mason Greenwood. Valencia and Getafe also showed interest, but have been reportedly priced out.

Marseille mayor wants Ligue 1 club to block deal with Manchester United for Mason Greenwood

Marseille mayor Benoit Payan spoke to the media last week after The Athletic reported a deal between the Ligue 1 club and Manchester United for Greenwood. He said (via CNN):

"Greenwood's behaviour is unspeakable, unacceptable. Hitting his wife... I saw images that deeply shocked me. Attacking his wife in this way is unworthy of a man, and I believe he cannot have a place in this team.
"The values of Marseille and the values of Olympique de Marseille are anything but that. It's anything but racism, anti-Semitism. It's anything but... can you imagine, violence against women? Do you realise that? And he wants to play for Olympique de Marseille, Greenwood?"

He added:

"It's a disgrace. I will ask the president of Olympique de Marseille not to recruit Greenwood. I don't want my club to be covered in the shame of someone who hits his wife. I don't want my club to be covered in the ashes of someone who hits his wife like that. It's not acceptable."

Mason Greenwood went to Manchester United's training center last week but did not join the first team. He has been training on his own to maintain fitness.
