Ligue 1 side set to make surprise move for Mason Greenwood; open talks with Manchester United - Reports

Ligue 1 club Olympique de Marseille have reportedly opened talks with Manchester United, as they look set to make a move for Mason Greenwood. The 22-year-old winger's future looks set to be elsewhere, rather than at Old Trafford, and a move to the French league could see him rejuvenate his career.

This comes after Greenwood was prosecuted by the UK's Crown Prosecution Service for assault, attempted rape, and coercive control. However, charges were eventually dropped, while the winger denied the allegations. Since January 2022, he has not played for Manchester United or England.

Even after the case was discontinued in mid-2023, the club agreed that he would not continue his career with them in Manchester. They loaned him out to Getafe last season, where he impressed, scoring eight goals and providing six assists in 33 La Liga games.

These performances have led to interest from numerous clubs, with Manchester United looking to sell Mason Greenwood, rather than keep him on their wage bill. According to a report from journalist David Ornstein, interest has now come from France's Ligue 1, with Marseille actively interested in the 22-year-old's services.

The report has revealed that they are already speaking with the Old Trafford hierarchy, although the conversations are in the early stages. They are yet to discuss the finances required to make the move happen, but Greenwood himself is interested in a switch to the French league.

Getafe president hints at Mason Greenwood's future with Manchester United exit almost guaranteed

The chances of Mason Greenwood leaving Manchester United have only increased of late. The forward's future seems to lie elsewhere, but the Red Devils will be looking to make some profit off his potential exit.

Despite interest from different clubs like Juventus and Borussia Dortmund, his loan club Getafe, are keen on keeping Greenwood on a permanent transfer.

Club president Torres has explained just how invested they are in keeping him, revealing to Mundo Deportivo (via Manchester Evening News):

“We have fifteen in the squad plus Greenwood, who we hope to give good news about soon and I hope will stay another year. As the press says, there are many offers, and we will abide by what Manchester United say. It looks like he will continue for another year. Every day that passes, there are more possibilities, but you have to be cautious.”

Mason Greenwood's future remains uncertain, but will likely be resolved this summer, as he has only a year left on his contract at Old Trafford.
