Lionel Messi wants Inter Miami to sign 2022 FIFA World Cup winning teammate: Reports
Lionel Messi is keen on Inter Miami signing River Plate goalkeeper Franco Armani in the January transfer window, according to Pasion Futbol (via Inter Miami News). The 38-year-old was part of the Argentina squad alongside Messi that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as well as the 2021 and 2024 editions of the Copa America.
The Herons have already been linked with Al-Hilal ace Neymar Jr. as they look to bolster their squad in the January transfer window. They are also reportedly interested in signing Angel Di Maria and Franco Armani.
Armani started his senior career at Ferro Carril Oeste and Deportivo Merlo before making a name for himself at Colombian side Atletico Nacional between 2010 and 2018. He has represented Argentine outfit River Plate ever since, keeping 138 clean sheets in 311 appearances across competitions.
Moreover, Armani has also made 19 appearances for the Argentina national team, keeping eight clean sheets. He has played alongside Lionel Messi in 18 games but has fallen behind Emi Martinez in the pecking order in recent years.
While Armani would offer a lot of experience to Inter Miami, a potential move would directly affect Drake Callender. The 27-year-old goalkeeper has been exceptional for his side in recent seasons, keeping 18 clean sheets in 115 appearances across competitions.
Inter Miami ace Lionel Messi included in 2024 MLS Best XI
Inter Miami skipper Lionel Messi has been included in the 2024 MLS Best XI alongside Jordi Alba as presented by Continental Tire. However, none of his other teammates have made the final list, with Luis Suarez also missing out.
Messi had an exceptional campaign for Inter Miami despite missing 17 games across competitions due to a muscular and ankle ligament injury. The 37-year-old scored 23 goals and provided 13 assists in 25 appearances across competitions, helping the Herons win the 2024 MLS Supporters' Shield trophy with a record-high 74 points from 34 games.
Even though Lionel Messi and Co. were unable to secure any other silverware, including the MLS Cup, the Barcelona legend was included in the Best XI.
Charlotte FC goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina makes the list, while the defense comprises of Jordi Alba, Seattle Sounders' Yeimar Gomez, and Columbus Crew's Steven Moreira. Luciano Acosta (FC Cincinnati), Riqui Puig (LA Galaxy), and Evander (Portland Timbers) make up the midfield.
Christian Benteke (DC United), Lionel Messi, Cucho Hernandez (Columbus Crew), and Denis Bouanga (LAFC) start up front to complete the XI.
