Liverpool not actively looking to sell star player despite interest from two Premier League clubs - Reports
Liverpool are reportedly not looking to sell Joe Gomez despite interest from multiple Premier League clubs. The versatile defender was linked with a £45 million transfer to Newcastle United earlier this summer.
Apart from the Magpies, Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with a move for Gomez, but it seems he could stay at Anfield beyond August. As per The Athletic's David Ornstein (via Empire of the Kop), the Reds aren't actively looking to sell him, and he is in Arne Slot's plans for the upcoming season.
Gomez, 27, arrived in Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in a €4.9 million deal nine years ago. Since then, the Englishman has made 224 senior appearances for the club, winning every major title under Jurgen Klopp in the process.
Gomez can play anywhere across the backline, including the left-back position, which makes him a top-quality utility player for any team. However, his time on Merseyside has been plagued with injuries, which is one of the reasons why he has hardly had an extended run in the starting XI.
Joel Matip's exit this summer would have otherwise meant an obvious increase in Gomez's chances for more minutes — granted the club didn't sign any other centre-back. But Jarell Quansah, 21, has recently made a huge impression at the club and could be a serious contender for a starting XI berth.
Apart from Quansah, Gomez will have to compete with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate in central defense. He could also continue being a backup right-back for Trent Alexander-Arnold, unless Slot has a plan in place for Conor Bradley.
'Grateful' Joe Gomez has already hinted at Liverpool stay
Joe Gomez was talking to the Anfield Wrap in May this year, where he seemed to hint at his immediate Liverpool future. The Englishman, it is worth noting, has three years left on his current deal.
He was quoted as saying (via Anfield Watch):
"Being here this many years it’s only grown over time making me realise how special it is here. Speaking to some of the boys that have moved on and them emphasising how good of a place this. I guess sometimes having something to compare it to helps, but I’m just grateful to be here and long may it continue."
Despite Quansah's breakthrough season, Gomez still played in 51 matches across competitions last season. He was part of a team that was on a serious hunt for four trophies going into March, but ended the campaign with just one trophy (the EFL Cup).
It remains to be seen if Arne Slot shows the same faith in Gomez as Jurgen Klopp did. The talk around Trent Alexander-Arnold's ability to play in central midfield may also lead one to think that the former Charlton man may be useful for the Reds in more ways than one.
