Liverpool believe star man will sign new deal despite Real Madrid links, contract set to make him highest paid player in PL: Reports
Liverpool are confident that Trent Alexander-Arnold will sign a contract extension at Anfield despite interest from Real Madrid, according to journalist Graeme Bailey. The new deal will also make the Englishman the highest-paid footballer at the Merseyside club.
Alexander-Arnold's contract with the Reds is all set to run out at the end of this season and he hasn't signed a new deal yet. Recent reports have suggested that Los Blancos are hot on his heels as they lay down succession plans for Dani Carvajal.
The LaLiga giants initially wanted to sign the player on a Bosman move in the summer of 2025. However, Dani Carvajal's unfortunate ACL injury could tempt Real Madrid to make a move to sign him in January.
However, Liverpool remain determined to tie the player down to a new deal. The 26-year-old rose through the ranks at Anfield and is one of the club's most important players. Trent Alexander-Arnold has registered 19 goals and 83 assists from 325 games for the Reds.
The Merseyside club are already engaged in talks to extend his stay and are willing to go to great lengths to ward off interest from Real Madrid. Recent reports have suggested that Liverpool have no desire to let the Englishman leave in January. They are willing to risk losing the player for free in the summer as they remain confident of tying him down to an extension.
When will Liverpool face Real Madrid in the Champions League?
Liverpool will lock horns with Real Madrid at Anfield on November 27 in the UEFA Champions League. The two teams have met 10 times in the tournament to date, with Los Blancos reigning supreme in recent games.
In fact, the LaLiga champions' last defeat against the Reds came in the Round of 16 in the 2008-09 season, where they lost both legs. That was also the first time that the two European heavyweights faced each other in the Champions League. Since then, Real Madrid have registered seven wins and one draw against the Merseyside club. That includes wins in the 2017-18 and 2021-22 finals.
However, Liverpool have been outstanding under Arne Slot this season. They have won 15 of their 17 games across competitions, losing just once. The Reds have already opened up a five-point gap at the top of the Premier League table. They have four wins in four games in the Champions League as well.
