Liverpool closing in on deal to sign priority target, set to offer €30m package to sign player - Reports
2024-25 Premier League title hopefuls Liverpool still haven’t made a single senior team signing in this summer transfer window, with the season already underway. However, with less than two weeks left for the window to be closed for the year, it seems like the Reds are finally making a move with the signing of Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia.
According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, the club is on the verge of closing in on a deal worth over €30 million, with the deal said to be in "advancing to final stages".
Here's what Romano posted on his X account:
"Giorgi Mamardashvili’s move to Liverpool for June 2025 now getting close, advancing to final stages! Liverpool and Valencia in contact to agree on add-ons structure, package over €30m. Mamardashvili would stay at Valencia on loan one season."
Earlier, it was reported that Valencia owner Peter Lim was firm on his asking price of around €40 million, with Liverpool likely to loan him to fellow Premier League side Bournemouth for two seasons. Romano, however, has said that the 23-year-old highly rated goalkeeper would remain at Valencia on a season-long loan, with the English giants unwilling to meet Lim's initial valuation.
Transfer window to heat up for Liverpool?
Since last season, there has been plenty of changes at Liverpool. Manager Arne Slot replaced popular outgoing German Jurgen Klopp. There has been change in the entire coaching staff and the administrative department as well with the return of Michael Edwards and signing of Sporting Director Richard Hughes from Bournemouth.
However, the playing staff has largely remained the same with no senior signing yet. Mamardashvili's signing, if it goes through, is likely to be met with subdued joy as that was not a position the club's first XI needed strengthening in. Brazilian number 1, Alisson Becker, whose contract runs till the end of the 2025-26 season, is still expected to continue with the Reds.
The 19-time English champions have been linked with a plethora of players this window, with Euro winning Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi their biggest target for the defensive midfield position. The Real Sociedad midfielder, however, decided against a move to England and stay at his boyhood club.
It was also reported by Simon Hughes from The Athletic that an alternative to the Basque midfielder would not be sought by Liverpool, who also showed interested in Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon, with Joe Gomez expected to go the other way. That move has also reportedly fallen through and the Reds' incomings column remains empty.
On the field, however, Liverpool have started the Premier League season in grand fashion. Arne Slot's side showed an impressive performance in the second half to defeat newly promoted Ipswich Town 2-0 away from home in their season opener on Saturday (August 17).
