Liverpool hold contract talks with star player who has a year left on his deal: Reports
Liverpool have allegedly opened talks with Trent Alexander-Arnold over a potential contract extension, with the Reds vice-captain attracting transfer interest from Real Madrid of late.
Alexander-Arnold, who made his debut for the Reds in 2016, is regarded as one of the best right-backs in the world. However, the Anfield outfit are in danger of losing their star on a free transfer next summer.
Now, according to Football Insider, Liverpool have held talks with Alexander-Arnold in the recent past and progress has been made in the renewal process. Both sides are confident that an agreement will be reached in the next few months. The player is in line for a significant pay hike as Reds head coach Arne Slot is keen to not lose the star.
Alexander-Arnold, 25, has a deal until next June. He has won eight trophies for the Reds so far, including one Premier League title and one UEFA Champions League crown. He has netted 19 goals and provided 81 assists in 310 overall appearances for his boyhood club.
The 29-cap England international is reportedly in no rush to leave Liverpool as the player is viewed as the future captain. However, his friendly relationship with Jude Bellingham could play a part in his decision as Real Madrid continue to pursue the creative right-back.
23-year-old told to reject move to Liverpool
Speaking to British betting website Best Online Poker Sites, ex-Chelsea and Celtic striker Chris Sutton shared his two cents on Anthony Gordon drawing interest from Liverpool. He opined (h/t Mirror):
"I heard these Gordon rumors a few months ago and was left scratching my head a little bit. I don't know how Newcastle [United] fans would feel about selling the player. The way Gordon was at Everton, I wasn't the only person who questioned whether he had the right temperament. But in fairness to him, he's gone to Newcastle to work under Eddie Howe and he's knuckled down."
Sutton, who represented England just once in his playing career, said:
"Last season, he was brilliant and performed well. He produced his best form. If I was him, I wouldn't be in a rush to leave Newcastle. The fans there really took to him... he felt the love from the Geordies. He seemed to have a really good relationship with the manager too, which is key. The Liverpool move is attractive and will come one day. But staying at Newcastle is the sensible option."
Since leaving Everton in a potential £45 million move in 2023, Gordon has bagged 13 goals and laid out 11 assists for 64 games for his club.
Newcastle United, on the other hand, will begin the 2024-25 season with a Premier League home tie against Southampton on August 17.
