Liverpool linked with move to sign Chelsea target as Reds aim to snap up replacement for Andy Robertson: Reports
Liverpool are set to battle Chelsea in the race to sign Lecce left-back Patrick Dorgu, as reported by Calciomercato. The Dane has been identified as a possible successor for Andrew Robertson at Anfield.
Dorgu broke into the Serie A club's starting XI last season, finishing the campaign with two goals and one assist from 34 games across competitions. The 19-year-old's efforts have caused quite a stir in the European circuit.
The Italian club were ready to let him go for £27m this summer, but none of his suitors were willing to match that asking price. Dorgu ended up staying and has been impressive this season as well, scoring one goal from five games.
The Danish left-back is one of the brightest young talents in Serie A and Liverpool are convinced by his efforts. The Reds want him at Anfield, although they consider him as an investment in their academy rather than the first team.
However, the Merseyside club believe that the player could eventually replace Robertson in the starting XI. The Scottish left-back has been indispensable for Liverpool in the last few years, but is now on the wrong side of 30.
The Reds are already laying down succession plans for the player and have their eyes on Dorgu as an option. However, they will face competition from Chelsea for the 19-year-old.
The Blues are a little light at left-back, having offloaded Ian Maatsen this summer. The London giants are also keen to remove Ben Chilwell from their roster and apparently have their eyes on Dorgu as his replacement.
Chelsea have already shown that they are not afraid to spend money on young talents in recent transfer windows. Their interest in the Dutchman could spell trouble for Liverpool.
Should Liverpool and Chelsea move for Patrick Dorgu in 2025?
Liverpool are looking to usher in a new era under Arne Slot, who took charge as Jurgen Klopp's replacement this summer. Chelsea, meanwhile, are fighting to get back to their best under Enzo Maresca, who arrived at Stamford Bridge in June this year.
The two clubs have an enviable squad at their disposal, but may need more quality to compete with the likes of Manchester City. Dorgu could add more depth to the Reds' squad and even prove to be a shrewd signing in time.
Meanwhile, his profile also fits Chelsea's recent transfer strategy. However, there's already a rising interest in the Dutchman's services, with Real Madrid and Manchester United also eyeing the player with interest.
