Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain in pole position to sign former Chelsea target: Reports
Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have set their sights on Rayan Cherki, according to Foot Mercato. The French forward's future at Lyon is subject to speculation, with his contract set to expire at the end of next season.
The 21-year-old was also heavily linked with an exit this summer, but ended up staying at the Groupama Stadium. He has been in fine form this campaign, registering five goals and seven assists from 17 games across competitions.
His efforts have already turned heads at multiple clubs across the continent. Liverpool, PSG and Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly among his admirers, but the former two are leading the race for his services.
The Reds remain on the hunt for attacking reinforcements, with Mohamed Salah's contract set to expire at the end of this season. Luis Diaz's future also remains up in the air, forcing the Merseyside club to consider their options.
Cherki's ability to play in midfield and across the frontline makes him an interesting option for the English giants. Lyon are in danger of relegation to Ligue 2 at the end of this season unless they get their finances in order.
The French giants have to offload players in January to address the situation and have reportedly set a €30m fee for Cherki. That should be no problem for Liverpool, although the Parisians are unlikely to give up without a fight.
When are Liverpool back in action?
Liverpool secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Southampton in the EFL Cup quarterfinal on Thursday, December 19, 2024. Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliot found the back of the net to help the Reds progress to the semifinals of the tournament.
The Merseyside club have been on a roll this season under Arne Slot and are leading the Premier League title race after 15 games. Liverpool have won 11 and lost just once in the league so far
They are two points ahead of second-placed Chelsea, but have played a game less. Slot's team next face Tottenham Hotspur in the league on Sunday, December 22, in the league.
The north London side have blown hot and cold this season, and are 10th in the league table. However, they arrive at the game on a run of two back-to-back wins against Southampton in the league and Manchester United in the EFL Cup quarterfinal.
