Liverpool plot surprise move for Barcelona star as they look to bolster Arne Slot's squad: Reports

Liverpool are reportedly interested in roping in Netherlands and Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong on a permanent deal ahead of the next term.

De Jong, who left Ajax to join the Blaugrana in a move worth up to £74 million, has cemented himself as an indispensable member of his club over the years. He has helped them lift three silverwares, including a La Liga title, so far.

However, according to Spanish news website Fichajes.net, De Jong has emerged as a target for Arne Slot's side with the player's contract set to expire in June 2026. He could be offloaded by Barcelona due to the club's financial issues.

De Jong, who will turn 28 next May, has featured in 222 matches across competitions for the Hansi Flick-coached side since 2019. The 55-cap Netherlands international has registered 17 goals and 21 assists for the La Liga leaders.

Should the Dutchman secure a move to Liverpool next summer, he could prove to be a good signing for them. He would emerge as a key starter for them and form a partnership with ex-Ajax teammate Ryan Gravenberch in midfield.

Ex-Barcelona star claims Liverpool ace should stay at boyhood club and not join Real Madrid

Speaking to online bookmaker Instant Casino, former Barcelona star Emmanuel Petit offered his thoughts on Reds vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold's recent links with Real Madrid. He said (h/t Yardbarker):

"You know what, I'm not sure about Alexander-Arnold and Real Madrid. He has the opportunity to stay at a huge club and he can become one of the best players in the history of a legendary and special club like Liverpool. That has to be something that is very interesting to him, especially as a local boy and a fan of the club."

Petit, who played for Arsenal before joining Barcelona in 2000, added:

"If he goes to Madrid, he's going to play every single season hoping to win the Champions League, but I think it's the same [if he decides to stay]. Liverpool, every time they are involved in the Champions League, they want to win, but they don't have the same recent history as Madrid in the competition. Madrid are the reference in the Champions League, but [the Reds] are a huge club."

Alexander-Arnold, 26, is in the final eight months of his Reds contract.

The England international could next be in action in his club's UEFA Champions League clash against Real Madrid at Anfield this Wednesday.
