Liverpool set to face competition from Manchester City for Serie A midfielder - Reports
Liverpool are reportedly going to provide Premier League rivals Manchester City competition for the signing of Atalanta midfielder Ederson. According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Pep Guardiola sees the Brazil international as a replacement for Rodri in the number six role (via Football Insider).
There seems to be a lot of conversation around the Spaniard after he picked up an injury that ruled him out for the remainder of the season. The likes of Rico Lewis and Mateo Kovacic could be used in this role, an option that is also being considered at the Etihad.
Should the Cityzens choose to find solutions within their own squad, it could open up an opportunity for Arne Slot and Co. to swoop in and make a deal for Ederson. Liverpool have seen Ryan Gravenberch operate at the base of their midfield this season, a player who isn't an out-and-out number six.
Therefore, a player of the Brazilian's profile may please the fans at Anfield, particularly after Ederson did so well last season. In the 2023/24 campaign, the 25-year-old made 53 appearances across competitions, bagging seven goals and an assist, helping his side win the Europa League.
However, it is worth noting that Ederson did play as a box-to-box midfielder, more than he did in the defensive midfield space. If it does come down to picking between Manchester City and Liverpool, the Reds may seem a better prospect.
Once Rodri returns, it is extremely likely that he will be the first choice at Manchester City. Meanwhile, there's an opportunity to gain regular minutes in Merseyside in the coming seasons.
