Manchester City join race to sign Ligue 1 star on Arsenal and Barcelona radar: Reports
Manchester City are reportedly the latest European powerhouse, alongside Arsenal and Barcelona, to express interest in signing Jonathan David, the 24-year-old Canadian forward leading Lille's attackline.
According to Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur, Manchester City are keen on securing the services of the highly rated striker in the upcoming transfer window. David’s stock has risen significantly, especially after his pivotal performance in Lille’s recent UEFA Champions League victory over Real Madrid, where he netted the match's only goal.
Meanwhile, Barcelona are reportedly planning to initiate negotiations with Lille. The Catalan club is said to be impressed by the forward’s consistent performances in Ligue 1 and wants to add him to their ranks. Konur, who first reported Barcelona’s interest four days ago, claims the La Liga giants are preparing a formal bid to lure the Canadian to Spain.
According to Football Insider (via The Hard Tackle), Arsenal are in contact with David’s representatives, as Mikel Arteta eyes a potential overhaul of his frontline. More interest from the Premier League comes from Newcastle United, who have recognized David as a player who could challenge or even replace Alexander Isak.
However, the Premier League clubs will have to contend with strong interest from Italy. Inter Milan may look to David as a replacement for Marcus Thuram. AC Milan are reportedly considering him due to underwhelming performances from summer arrivals Tammy Abraham and Alvaro Morata.
Juventus, too, have their eyes on the striker, with David potentially competing for the No. 9 role alongside Dusan Vlahovic.
Why are Arsenal, Manchester City, and Barcelona pursuing Jonathan David's signature?
Lille's talisman Jonathan David has been one of the most consistent performers since joining the club in 2020. Over the five seasons, the 24-year-old has scored 92 goals and assisted 20 times in 195 appearances.
David can play various attacking roles, a trait that has captured the attention of Mikel Arteta, Pep Guardiola, and Hansi Flick. The forward has already scored eight times in 12 appearances in the ongoing season.
Arsenal, in particular, sees David as a potential upgrade to Gabriel Jesus, who has been underwhelming. Meanwhile, Manchester City could use his dynamism to complement Erling Haaland, especially after the departure of Julian Alvarez.
For Barcelona, with Robert Lewandowski 36 now, securing the Canadian forward could aid their ambition to replenish the forward line.
