Manchester United considering shock move for ex-Chelsea star this summer - Reports
Manchester United are reportedly pondering a move for former Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso. The Spanish left-back, who left Barcelona earlier this summer, is a free agent.
Manchester Evening News' Samuel Luckhurst reports that Alonso is an option for the Red Devils as they look to add another left-back to their squad. Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have dealt with long-running injury issues that hampered Erik ten Hag's defense last season.
Manchester United could swoop for Alonso, 33, as a cost-effective signing. He has Premier League experience after spending six years at Chelsea (2016-22) before leaving for Barca.
Alonso suffered from a back problem throughout last season and rarely appeared for the Catalans. He made just eight appearances in the 2023-24 campaign before his contract expires.
The Blaugrana confirmed Alonso's exit at the end of June, and he's been a free agent since departing. The Spaniard is one of three left-backs on United's shortlist as they look to strengthen their defense.
Sergio Reguilon is another option. He spent the first half of last season on loan at Old Trafford from Tottenham Hotspur and returned to Spurs after another loan spell at Brentford.
Feyenoord's David Hancko is the third left-back on United's list and perhaps the most attractive option. The Slovakian can play left center-back and left-back and has impressed in the Eredivisie.
Inter Milan rule themselves out of race for ex-Chelsea star Marcos Alonso amid Manchester United interest
Manchester United won't have to worry about a potential battle with Inter Milan for Alonso. The Serie A giants were linked with the nine-cap Spain international after he left Barca.
However, Inter president Guiseppe Marotta has downplayed suggestions Alonso could join the San Siro outfit. He said (via Football Espana):
"I’ve read lots of things and lots of names, including Marcos Alonso, but I can exclude him as we already have a strong squad."
Alonso previously played in Serie A with Fiorentina before joining Chelsea eight years ago. He became somewhat of a fan favorite at Stamford Bridge but never truly nailed down the left-back starting berth.
Manchester United could benefit from Alonso's experience but will be cautious, given his injury record last season. Shaw has recovered from a long-term muscle injury as he appeared at Euro 2024 with England.
However, Shaw will miss United's pre-season tour of the United States this summer. Malacia is also still sidelined after missing the entire 2023-24 campaign; thus, the Red Devils are eager to sign a new left-back.
