Manchester United hold talks to hire Portuguese manager - Reports
Manchester United are reportedly working on a deal to appoint Ruben Amorim as their next manager. The Red Devils want the Portuguese as the replacement after sacking Erik ten Hag on Monday, October 28.
As per a report by David Ornstein on The Athletic, Manchester United have opened talks to appoint Amorim as their next manager. The Sporting CP coach is open to taking over at Old Trafford and is waiting for the clubs to agree on a deal.
The manager was asked earlier on Monday if he was interested in becoming the next Manchester United manager. The Portuguese was quick to rebuff the questions and state that he was not going to comment on his future at the club. He said:
"I was expecting that question, and obviously, I’m not going to talk about the future because otherwise, I’ll always have to comment, so it’s not worth it; I won’t comment. I’m very proud to be the coach of Sporting, that’s all. I didn't know about United's interest, if there is any. The price is not up to me, it's up to the president. I won't comment on my future."
The Athletic report that Amorim has a €10 million release clause clause in his contract, and Manchester United are ready to activate it. Amorim was linked with a move to the Premier League earlier this year but stayed with the Portuguese side.
West Ham United and Chelsea were interested in the Sporting CP manager, as per reports. Manchester City were linked with the manager earlier this month as a potential replacement for Pep Guardiola in the future.
Manchester United target Ruben Amorim commented on Manchester City links
Manchester United target Ruben Amorim spoke about Manchester City's reported interest earlier this month. It came after the club agreed a deal to appoint Hugo Viana as the club's new sporting director. The manager was reported to follow as Pep Guardiola's contract expires at the end of the season.
However, Amorim distanced himself from the move and told Cabine Desportiva:
"Hugo Viana and me, we have different and separate paths. His appointment doesn’t mean that I’m going to Man City. We have a very good professional relationship. Nothing about Sporting has changed. Nothing. Everything remains the same until the end of the season.
"Obviously, Viana, during City's week, won't be available to enter the dressing room. I'm going to leave him out, to avoid conflicts. Otherwise, everything will stay the same until the end of the season."
Apart from Rubem Amorim, the Red Devils have been linked with Thomas Frank, Graham Potter, and Julian Nagelsmann. Gareth Southgate has ruled himself out, while Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as the new England manager.
