Manchester United plotting another move for Barcelona star this summer - Reports
Manchester United are reportedly planning a move for Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong. The 26-year-old midfielder has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for the last couple of years, but the Red Devils have not managed to pull off a deal.
As per a report in Barca Universal, Manchester United are looking to bolster their midfield and see De Jong as a good fit. The Red Devils are plotting a move but are yet to contact the player or the club.
Barcelona received a €100 million bid for De Jong from an unnamed club last season. They were not ready to sell the midfielder and claimed he was among the players not on the transfer list.
Club president Joan Laporta told the media (via the Daily Mail):
"Last year we had €100 million offer for Frenkie de Jong… and we did well not selling him. There are players who should not be on the market."
Apart from Manchester United, PSG and Bayern Munich are also said to be interested in the Dutchman, who missed EURO 2024.
Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong blasts media amid Manchester United reports
Frenkie de Jong was furious with the media talking about his possible Barcelona exit and took criticized them earlier this year in February. The Manchester United target claimed that they were making up stories about him and said (via the Daily Mail):
"If I'm honest, I am getting quite irritated lately. I am very angry at what you (media) write or say about me. There are a lot of stories that are simply not true. I simply can't get my head around it. Some of you write lies all the time and I don't get how you are not ashamed about it."
He added:
"There's a lot of talk about my contract situation and my salary. There's a lot of smoke in there and plenty of lies. You the media are saying that I earn around £34.3 million-per-year (€40m-per-year)… this is really far from the truth. I am not going to reveal figures, but that's simply lying. I am really happy here. Barcelona was and is the club of my life, it was my dream to play here and it still is. I am not happy with the press and everything that surrounds the club because, as I've been saying, it's full of lies."
Erik ten Hag has worked with Frenkie de Jong at Ajax. The Manchester United manager has reportedly been pushing to sign the Barcelona star since moving to Old Trafford.
