Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand insists title challenge was beyond club's aspirations this season

Rio Ferdinand reckons a top-four finish will be a job well done for Ten Hag.
Rio Ferdinand reckons a top-four finish will be a job well done for Ten Hag.

Manchester United picked up their first piece of silverware in six years when they won the Carabao Cup in February. The Red Devils were in fine form and had put themselves in potential contention for a surprise title challenge.

However, Ten Hag's men have faltered and are now at risk of missing out on the top four. They sit fourth, a point above fifth-placed Liverpool, but with a game in hand.

Ferdinand has argued that the Red Devils' aspirations at the start of the season were to finish in the top four, telling his Vibe with FIVE YouTube channel:

'You've got to be a realist. Man United's aspirations at the beginning of the season were never to win the league; it was to be finishing in the top four, and if you got your hands on a trophy, he swum the channel, whatever trophy it was. That's where he's at."

Ferdinand added:

"Hopefullym if we finish in the top four, you can say well done. Because you start hovering around the top, you've got to still stay realistic if you're at a football club. Man United can't get out of their pram."

Manchester United four games remaining in the Premier League. They will next be in action against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford on Saturday (May 13).
