Manchester United stepping up interest in Bundesliga superstar linked with move to European giants - Reports

Manchester United are reportedly prepared to enter into the race to sign Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies despite long-standing interest from Real Madrid. The Red Devils are looking to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window after a disappointing start to the 2024-25 season.

The left-back position has been a problematic one at Manchester United in recent years. This is mainly due to the incessant injury problems faced by first-choice left-back Luke Shaw. Tyrell Malacia was signed to provide cover, but the Dutchman himself has not been seen around a pitch since the 2022-23 season, nearly two years ago.

Erik ten Hag's side have had right-back Diogo Dalot fill in in the position since the start of the season. However, they are now set to attack the transfer market. Canada international Alphonso Davies has emerged as an interesting option for clubs, seeing as he is in the final year of his contract at Bayern Munich.

Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg has revealed that the 23-year-old is a concrete target for the Red Devils as they look to sign a new left-back. They have carried out extensive groundwork on the player and have established informal contact with his representatives, as well.

Manchester United will have the interest of Real Madrid to deal with, as the player has shown an inclination in the past to join the Spanish giants. With no contract extension in sight, Los Blancos are reportedly waiting to sign the pacey defender as a free agent in the summer.

The Premier League side can beat the European champions to the signing of Davies, just as they did with Leny Yoro in the summer. They could make a move to sign him in January. Bayern Munich will be open to selling him in the January transfer window as opposed to getting no fee for him in the summer.

Manchester United to be without both left-backs for West Ham tie

Manchester United will face West Ham United without both of their senior left-backs as they look to pick up a second successive league win. The Red Devils continue to suffer the impact of injuries on their squad, which has already been stretched thin.

Ahead of their trip to the London Stadium on October 27, manager Erik ten Hag named veteran Jonny Evans as the only returned from among the injured players. This means that both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, who are yet to feature this season, will not take part in the game on Sunday.

Ten Hag said in his pre-match press conference via manutd.com:

"We expect, of course, Bruno [Fernandes] back and, hopefully, also Jonny Evans.”

Manchester United played Lisandro Martinez at left-back in their UEFA Europa League win against Fenerbahce on Thursday, October 24. Meanwhile, Diogo Dalot has also featured in the position. Ten Hag is expected to begin the game against the Hammers with one of them in the position, while they await the return of Shaw and Malacia to fitness.
