Manchester United trying to hijack AC Milan's deal to sign midfielder - Reports

Manchester United are reportedly trying to hijack Youssouf Fofana's potential move to AC Milan. Atletico Madrid are also in the mix, trying to bring in the AS Monaco midfielder.

As per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Fofana has agreed on personal terms with AC Milan for a potential summer move. The Italian giants are in negotiations with Monaco for the midfielder. The French side have already rejected a €30 million bid for him this summer.

As per Calciomercato (via Atletico Universe), Manchester United and Atletico Madrid are trying to hijack the deal. The Red Devils are unlikely to sign Sofyan Amrabat permanently after his loan spell from Fiorentina last season. Meanwhile, Scott McTominay, Christian Eriksen, and Casemiro have been linked with moves away.

Hence, Erik ten Hag's side are looking to bolster their midfield. Fofana, 25, has impressed during his time at Monaco since arriving from Strasbourg in January 2020. He's made 175 appearances, scoring seven goals and providing 15 assists. His contract expires in 2025.

AC Milan are pushing to complete the deal quickly to avoid interest from other clubs.

A look at Manchester United's pre-season ahead of 2024-25 campaign

Manchester United finished their lowest-ever eighth in the Premier League last season but won the FA Cup. They are now looking for a major overhaul under INEOS in terms of the squad and the hierarchy as well. Hence, this pre-season and summer transfer window is highly important.

The Red Devils have signed striker Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna and defender Leny Yoro from LOSC Lille. Meanwhile, Donny van de Beek (Girona), Mason Greenwood (Olympique Marseille), and Willy Kambwala (Villarreal) have left the club.

In terms of pre-season matches, United began their campaign with a 1-0 defeat against Norwegian club Rosenborg at the Lerkendal Stadion on July 15. They then beat Rangers 2-0 at the Murrayfield Stadium on July 20 courtesy of goals from Amad Diallo and Joe Hugill.

Manchester United will now begin their US trip, taking on Arsenal on July 27 before facing Real Betis on July 31. They will end their tour against Liverpool on August 3 before facing Manchester City in the Community Shield final on August 10.
