Manchester United unsure about handing new contract to star currently on £250,000-per-week deal – Reports

Manchester United are reportedly unsure about renewing Anthony Martial's current contract with the striker in the last year of his deal.

According to ESPN, the Old Trafford hierarchy are said to be taking their time prior to arriving at a decision about the player's future at the club. They are keeping their options open with the ex-Lyon player, with an extension a possibility depending on his upcoming outings.

Manchester United, who roped in Rasmus Hojlund in a potential £72 million switch from Atalanta past month, were willing to let Martial depart in the summer. But they only received an offer from the Saudi Pro League and the Frenchman rejected the chance to enter talks.

Martial, who arrived from AS Monaco in a deal worth up to £58 million in 2015, has struggled to shine under Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag. He has started 20 of his 38 overall appearances under his manager so far, scoring 10 goals and providing four assists in the process.

Should Manchester United opt not to exercise the option to hand Martial a contract extension before January, the 27-year-old could secure a Bosman switch to a non-domestic club. Hence, they could cash in on the star in the winter window, firstly to earn a transfer amount and secondly to shed his £250,000-a-week salary from the wage bill.

Overall, Martial has made 307 appearances across all competitions for his current club. He has scored 89 goals and contributed 54 assists in 19,385 minutes of first-team action, operating across the front three.

Journalist names two clubs other than West Ham as suitors for Manchester United star

Speaking on the Sky Sports' Back Pages podcast, reputed journalist Charlie Wyatt was asked if West Ham United would be a good fit for Manchester United defender Harry Maguire. He replied (h/t Tribal Football):

"Yeah, potentially. And I thought maybe even Newcastle to strengthen their squad, they have more games. I think he'd be a good fit for Newcastle or maybe even Tottenham. He's a good player. He gets a lot of stick with some of the rubbish he has to put up with."

Maguire, 30, has dropped down in his side's pecking order since Erik Ten Hag and Lisandro Martinez's respective arrivals last summer. The ex-club captain started 16 of his 31 appearances in the 2022-23 season.

A right-footed ball-playing centre-back, the Englishman was allegedly linked with a move to West Ham United earlier this summer. With him starting just two games so far this campaign, he could exit next January.
