Manchester United weighing up a move for Cristiano Ronaldo's boyhood club wonderkid: Reports
Manchester United are reportedly eyeing Geovany Quenda from Cristiano Ronaldo's boyhood club Sporting CP as their new transfer target. The 17-year-old right winger was promoted to Sporting CP's senior side this season and has already become a regular starter under manager Ruben Amorim.
Geovany Quenda, 17, has played 12 senior games for Sporting CP across competitions this season, registering a goal and an assist each. The Portuguese prodigy has been a menace in the right wing, making darting runs up and down the field and helping both the attack and defense. He has also featured once in Liga Portugal's Team of the Week.
Quenda's performances haven't gone unnoticed by Portugal manager Roberto Martinez, who called him up for this month's UEFA Nations League clashes against Poland and Scotland. However, the right-winger ended up playing for the U21 side instead.
According to a report by A Bola, Manchester United have set their sights on Geovany Quenda. The Red Devils only have Amad Diallo and Antony as options in the right wing and are reportedly looking for Quenda to bolster that position.
Antony has played only four games this season across competitions, scoring a solitary goal. Amad Diallo, meanwhile, has played 10 games, registering a goal and an assist each.
Geovany Quenda recently extended his club contract for Sporting CP through to 2027, with a buyout clause raised to €100 million. Therefore, it will take a lot of negotiation to bring the Portuguese talent to Old Trafford.
Cristiano Ronaldo opens up about his interaction with Geovany Quenda
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo opened up about his first interaction with Sporting CP prodigy Geovany Quenda. During an interview (via GOAL), Ronaldo was asked whether he has to act as a father figure to the young blood in the national team camp. To this, Cristiano Ronaldo recalled his first interaction with Quenda.
"Many of them are embarrassed to talk to me! A little while ago, I was going up to my room and I saw the new boy, 17 years old, Quenda. I went to him and said: 'So, have you recovered from the game?'. I saw that he was embarrassed," said the Ballon d'Or winner.
He continued:
"I don't say I'm a father, but an older brother. It could be a father to some and, as I said before, I've been through the same thing as them and the national team is a family. We're focusing on the Nations League, which is a fun competition and one that Portugal wants to win."
Cristiano Ronaldo, meanwhile, is the highest international goalscorer in men's football history with 133 goals and 45 assists in 216 games.
