Real Madrid suffer transfer blow as Premier League side decide not to sell star player - Reports
Real Madrid have suffered a setback in their efforts to sign Cristian Romero in 2025. According to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur will not consider an offer for the Argentinean defender.
Los Blancos are in the market for defensive reinforcements following the recent ACL injury to Eder Militao. The Brazilian defender is set to be sidelined for the rest of the season, which will be a big blow for the Spanish champions. Real Madrid are already without David Alaba, who picked up an ACL injury last year and is yet to return to full fitness.
The LaLiga giants bid adieu to Nacho Fernandez over the summer and didn't sign a replacement. That decision already appears ill-advised, with Antonio Rudiger as the only fit senior center-back available to Carlo Ancelotti at the moment. They also have Jesus Vallejo but he's been out of favor, playing just 10 minutes this season.
Los Blancos are apparently planning to address the issues at the turn of the year and have their eyes on Romero. The 26-year-old has been a rock at the back for Spurs and is admired at the Santiago Bernabeu. Romero has also been indispensable for his national team in recent years, helping them win the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
With Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba both on the wrong side of 30, the Argentinean could become the long-term partner for Eder Militao at Real Madrid. However, Tottenham have no desire to let him go and are instead planning to bolster their backline in January. Romero is under contract with the north London club until 2027.
Will Real Madrid re-sign Sergio Ramos?
While Real Madrid's pursuit of Cristian Romero may not be fruitful, they do have other options to bolster their backline. One of them is Sergio Ramos, who spent 16 seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu and is currently available as a free agent.
The veteran Spaniard left Los Blancos in the summer of 2021 after failing to reach an agreement regarding a renewal. Ramos joined Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on a Bosman move and spent two seasons in Paris.
He left the French champions in the summer of 2023 to rejoin his boyhood club, Sevilla. However, the 38-year-old left the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium this summer and is yet to join his next club.
Ramos could join immediately and help steady the ship at the Santiago Bernabeu. However, recent reports have suggested that Real Madrid are not planning to bring him back. The LaLiga giants will wait until the turn of the year to invest in new players instead.
