Ruben Amorim has given green light for sale of 24-year-old Manchester United star: Reports
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has sanctioned Antony's sale in January 2025, according to The Daily Star. The Brazilian winger had struggled for game time this season under Erik ten Hag, registering just five appearances across competitions.
The Red Devils reportedly paid Ajax £82m to secure his services in the summer of 2022, but Antony has failed to live up to the promise so far. The 24-year-old is now a peripheral figure at Old Trafford.
Antony will be eager to impress Amorim in the coming days, but a decision on his future appears to have been made already. The former Sporting CP manager arrives at Manchester United with an impressive resume, having lifted two league titles during his time at the Portuguese club.
Amorim took charge of his first training session at Carrington on Monday, where Antony was used as a right wing-back. That sparked a frenzy among fans, who were optimistic that the Brazilian could regain his form in a new position.
However, it must be noted that the Red Devils are without a lot of their first team stars, who are currently on international duty. As such, things are likely to change as Amorim has more players available.
It now appears that the Portuguese tactician has informed Manchester United to move Antony on. The club will listen to offers for the player in January, and will offload him permanently or send him out on loan. Overall, the Brazilian made 87 appearances across competitions, scoring 12 goals and giving five assists.
When is Ruben Amorim's first home game in charge of Manchester United?
Manchester United parted ways with Erik ten Hag at the end of October after their worst ever start to a Premier League season. New minority owners INEOS swiftly appointed Amorim as the Dutchman's replacement while Ruud van Nistelrooy was stationed as interim manager.
The former United striker has left the English giants since Amorim's arrival, with the Portuguese bringing his own backroom staff. Amorim's first game in charge of the Red Devils will be at Portman Road on Sunday, November 24, against Ipswich Town in the Premier League.
Amorim will then lead his team out at Old Trafford for the first time on November 28, for the Europa League tie against Bodo/Glimt. Manchester United are 13th in the Premier League table after 11 games, 13 points behind leaders Liverpool. They are 15th in the Europa League table after four games, with one win and three draws.
