Rumour: Arsenal interested in Bayern Munich striker Mario Mandzukic

Mario Mandzukic

Arsenal have been alerted to the potential availability of Bayern Munichstriker Mario Mandzukic, with The Metro reporting that they could be about to make a move to sign the striker. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was lukewarm on suggestions that he could be in the market for another player when questioned this week, but could be interested in a loan move for Mandzukic should he be available.

Mandzukic has scored 10 goals in 16 Bundesliga appearances, but is likely to find his chances limited next season due to the summer arrival of Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski.

Bayern legend Franz Beckenbauer – honorary president at the club – was dismissive of Mandzukic when questioned about the Croatian, suggesting that he has no future at the club.

“Mandzukic could pack his bags,” said Beckenbauer. “I don’t think Mandzukic suits Pep Guardiola’s style.”

“Also – even without him, Guardiola could still count on Thomas Muller and Mario Gotze in attack.”

Whilst Beckenbauer no longer holds an official position of power at the club, he is not alone in doubting Mandzukic’s long term future.

Should Mandzukic leave Bayern before the end of the transfer window then Arsenal would be a likely destination. The Gunners are in the market for a striker to provide competition for Olivier Giroud, and Wenger is known to be a long term admirer of Mandzukic.

Mandzukic has won 51% of his headed duels this season, winning 43 of his 84 aerial contests.
