Rumour: Barcelona target Liverpool’s Daniel Agger as Carles Puyol’s replacement
Barcelona are reportedly monitoring the availability of Liverpool’s Daniel Agger as the club look to cope without the presence of Carles Puyol next season.
The Metro report that the Catalan club will overhaul their squad in the summer and have listed the Denmark international as one of their main targets.
Given their style and Agger’s ability with the ball at his feet, the 29-year-old would be a perfect replacement for the departing Puyol as Barcelona look to improve on what has been a relatively disappointing campaign for the reigning La Liga champions.
If Brendan Rodgers was to allow Agger to join Barcelona then he would need to find a replacement of his own. The defender has been competing with Mamadou Sakho for a place in Liverpool’s starting line-up next to Martin Skrtel this season and has featured 19 times in the Premier League, leaving a large gap in Brendan Rodgers’ already leaky defence.
With the Reds back in the Champions League, Rodgers will need all the experience he can get next season and Agger is one of only five players currently in the Liverpool squad that was at the club last time they were competing with Europe’s elite.
With money to spend and European football on offer, plenty of players will be keen to join the title challengers so there’s every possibility of the defender leaving the club if the right offer comes in.
