Barcelona star targeted by Newcastle United who are seeking a cheaper alternative to Marc Guehi - Reports

Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen is reportedly one of the prime targets of Newcastle United, who are seeking an alternative to Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi. Christensen joined the Blaugrana on a free transfer from Chelsea in 2022.

The Magpies have been in hot pursuit of Guehi this summer but have seen four bids rejected. Their last bid was reportedly valued at £60 million plus £5 million in add-ons.

Forced to consider alternatives, Magpies boss Eddie Howe is apparently targeting Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah and Barcelona's Andreas Christensen. As per Mundo Deportivo, Christensen piqued the interest of Newcastle earlier this summer, but they didn't expect Barca to greenlight the deal.

However, Christensen was benched in Barca's La Liga opener against Valencia, which has kept Newcastle's interest in the defender alive,

Christensen is known for his calmness with the ball and ability to see passing channels and distribute into open spaces. Furthermore, the 28-year-old is renowned for his aerial abilities and can be a lethal weapon during set-pieces.

Before joining Chelsea, the Danish defender spent five years at Stamford, where he registered two goals and as many assists in 161 games across competitions.

Andreas Christensen became the second-fastest Barcelona player to score in the Champions League when he bagged a late winner against PSG in the first leg of the quarter-final at the Parc des Princes in April this year.

The Blaugrana started on a positive note and took the lead in the 37th minute, courtesy of a pinpoint cross by Lamine Yamal followed by a calm finish by Raphinha.

However, Ousmane Dembele levelled proceedings before Vitinha put the hosts into the lead. However, Raphinha scored the equaliser in the 62nd minute.

Barca's comeback was completed by super sub Christensen as he directed an Ilkay Gundogan header. He became the second-fastest substitute to score for the Blaugrana in Champions League history, after Bojan Krkic, who had done so after 50 seconds.

Furthermore, Christensen became the first Barca player to score in the Champions League on his birthday.
