Rumour: Chelsea's John Obi Mikel to leave for Inter Milan?

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel could be set for a move to Serie A side Internazionale in the summer, according to the Mirror.

The 26-year-old, who has spent eight years at Stamford Bridge, has fallen down the central midfield pecking order under Jose Mourinho in recent months, with just nine Premier League starts this season.

The Nigerian international is not only behind club legend Frank Lampard and Brazilian Ramires, but new arrival Nemanja Matic too, who joined the west Londoners in a £21 million deal in January. The Serbian has produced several assured displays in the centre of the park and Mikel faces a tough task if he is to earn a starting berth for the remainder of the campaign.

With the player unsettled and frustrated with a lack of game time, Nerazzurri manager Walter Mazzarri is reportedly interested in a £12.3 million move for the midfielder as he plots a huge overhaul of his squad.

Inter Milan are currently 11 points off of a Champions League place and there are huge expectations around the club that need to return the Europe’s top table next season, with new recruits a necessity if they are to succeed.

Mikel often appears to dwell on the ball in England and fails to make his presence felt in the big games, but the slower pace of the Serie A game could suit his characteristics.

The Italians, are also reportedly close to finalising a deal with Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic, who is available on a free transfer in the summer when his contract with the Red Devils expires.
