Rumour: Chelsea to test Southampton's resolve with £20m bid for left back Luke Shaw

Southampton are preparing themselves for a £20m January transfer bid from Chelsea for Luke Shaw that could spark a transfer merry go-round as being reported in the press today. What do you think of the Southampton youngster?

As we all know, Luke Shaw was born and raised local to the club and was a Chelsea fan growing up as a kid. If Jose Mourinho and Chelsea came in with a massive bid, you would have to imagine that it would be hard for both the club and the player to turn it down plus let’s not forget that Shaw is English and would bolster the English contingent at the club.

I have to say, I was really, really impressed with Shaw’s performance at left back when Southampton came to the Bridge a couple of weeks ago. For someone of his age, he has a mature head on his shoulders and has become an important part of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans.

If these newspaper reports are to be believed and Chelsea do offer £20m for Shaw and manage to get a deal agreed, it would spark a transfer merry go-round with Ryan Bertrand (reportedly) going to Everton and Leighton Baines moving to Manchester United.

Ashley Cole looks set to be given a new one year contract despite his difficulties this season, and if Chelsea were to sign Shaw, you’d have to imagine the two would rotate next season.

What about Ryan Bertrand in all this? Well, you can’t help but feel that Bertrand hasn’t made the progress that the club had hoped which is why we have seen Cesar Azpilicueta play ahead of him when Cole has been injured or dropped.

For me, Shaw is a better option at left back than Bertrand and at his age, will only get better and better!
