Liverpool eye move for Brazil defender as Virgil van Dijk replacement - Reports

Liverpool are reportedly contemplating a move for Juventus centre-back Gleison Bremer as a replacement for captain Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman is in the final year of his deal at Anfield, having arrived from Southampton in January 2018.

The 33-year-old Van Dijk has been a colossal presence in the heart of defence for the Reds over the years, helping the club to every title they've competed in except the UEFA Europa League.

However, with uncertainty regarding his future at the club, the Reds are preparing for life without Virgil van Dijk. As per TeamTalk, they are eyeing Bremer as an option, but the Brazilian would cost around €70 million, having penned an extension at the Allianz Arena till 2029.

Bremer, 27, has scored eight times and bagged an assist in 88 games across competitions for Juve since arriving from Torino in the summer of 2022. The 2023-24 Coppa Italia winner has had a good start to the new Serie A season, with Juve keeping clean sheets in all four games, the only team to do so in the competition.

Another option for the Reds is Sporting CP's Goncalo Inacio, but he's not going to come cheap either. The 23-year-old has a reported release clause of €60 million and has a long list of suitors in the fray.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is pleased with the reaction from his team in their UEFA Champions League opener at AC Milan in midweek following a 1-0 Premier League home loss to Nottingham Forest at the weekend.

The Forest loss snapped the Reds' three-game winning start to the season under new boss Arne Slot, who succeeded the legendary Jurgen Klopp at the Anfield helm this summer.

However, the Reds bounced back to winning ways at the San Siro, recovering from conceding a third-minute opener to take the win by scoring three times without reply.

"I think, especially after the first three minutes, we showed the reaction in Milan I like to see," Van Dijk said (as per the Mirror). "On to many more. You have to remember, who is saying things are a disaster (if we don’t win)? People from the outside, so what can you do about the outside? The only influence we have is what we do on the pitch.

Liverpool return to Premier League action this weekend, taking on Bournemouth at home on Saturday (September 21). They are fourth in the standings after four games, three points behind leaders Manchester City (12).
