Manchester City's Julian Alvarez set to join La Liga giants on €95m deal: Fabrizio Romano
Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez is reportedly set to join Atletico Madrid on a five-year deal worth €95 million. The 24-year-old was at the Etihad since 2022.
Alvarez has contributed 36 goals and 18 assists in 103 games across competitions. In his first season at the club, the 2024 Copa America winner helped City win their first continental treble, bagging 17 goals and five assists in 49 outings, scoring in five different competitions.
Last season, he bagged 11 goals and nine assists in 36 games as City won an unprecedented Premier League four-peat. However, despite his contract at the Etihad running till 2028, there were reports of his departure this summer.
As per transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, City have accepted Atletico's offer of €95 million (€75 million fixed, the rest in add-ons). It's a significant profit for City, considering they bought the Argentine for only £14 million (€16 million) two years ago from River Plate.
The City striker was most recently in action for his country at 2024 Copa America, where La Albiceleste defended their title, with Alvarez scoring twice in five games.
Erling Haaland stars for Manchester City in pre-season win over Chelsea
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland starred with a hat-trick as Pep Guardiola's side beat domestic rivals Chelsea 4-2 at the Columbus Stadium in Ohio on Monday (August 4).
In a blistering start, the City marksman scored twice inside the opening five minutes - including one from the spot - as the reigning four-time Premier League winners led 2-0 at the break.
Oscar Bobb made it 3-0 10 minutes into the second period before Haaland completed his hat-trick a minute later to effectively end the game as a contest. Former City man Raheem Sterling pulled one back in the 59th minute before Noni Madueke scored another for the Blues in the 89th minute, but an equaliser wasn't to be.
Guardiola's side open the 2024-25 season with an FA Community Shield clash with Manchester United at the Wembley in London on August 10.
