Rumour: Manchester United consider bid for AC Milan defender Philippe Mexes

AC Milan’s Philippe Mexes

Manchester United have reportedly targeted Philippe Mexes to bolster their back-line for next season as part of the huge overhaul of the squad planned at Old Trafford, according to reports in the Italian press.

Nemanja Vidic has already signed a deal to take him to Inter Milan next season and Rio Ferdinand looks set to follow him out of the exit door, leaving David Moyes short of option in the centre of his defence, having as yet failed to decide whether Phil Jones is a midfielder or defender and preferring to utilise Chris Smalling in the full-back position.

He has been given between £150-200million to spend in the summer to reinforce their underachieving team and AC Milan’s stalwart Mexes is a potential target after falling out of favour at the San Siro.

Mexes has played just once since Clarence Seedorf took over at Milan and he has reportedly been made surplus to requirements after three years with the Italian giants.

At 31 years of age, David Moyes still feels he has plenty to offer and brings some vital experience to his youthful looking defensive options, with a wealth of international and Champions League appearances behind him.

Milan are keen to sell in order to fund their own rebuilding process after a desperately disappointing season of their own and Moyes could snap him up in a cut-price deal in order to maintain funds for other areas of the squad.

United could face competition however, with Turkish side Besiktas also preparing a deal to tempt Mexes away from the fashion capital.

Philippe Mexes has made just 11 appearances for AC Milan this season, but has made 82 clearances and 22 interceptions.
