Rumour: Manchester United to beat Chelsea to sign Southampton left-back Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw (R)

The Mirror report that Manchester United have made a £22.5 million bid forSouthampton left back Luke Shaw. United are on the verge of signing Juan Mata from Chelsea and – if the rumours are true – could be set to make a second big signing of the transfer window with a swoop for Shaw.

The left back is said to be seen by United boss David Moyes as the long term successor to Patrice Evra, but has long been a target for Chelsea. The Blues are also believed to see him as the long term solution at left back, with the Mirror believing that they have also made a bid for Shaw, said to be in the region of £21 million.

Shaw has made 19 Premier League appearances for Southampton this season and has established himself as a key part of the Saints side, despite his age. The 18 year-old has missed just three league games this season, after breaking into the side at the beginning of last season.

Should United move for Shaw, then it could spell the end of Evra’s Manchester United career. The French defender has been a near ever present for United this season, but is out of contract at the end of the season.

The Man United and Chelsea target has been successful in 52% of his tackles this season.
