Rumour: Jose Mourinho targets Diego Costa, Radamel Falcao, Edinson Cavani and Antoine Griezmann
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is highly likely to be in the market for a striker in the summer, given the club’s current crop’s current lack of prowess in front of goal.
The Evening Standard have today suggested a number of forward players that are currently on Mourinho’s shopping list, so here we take a look at the stats behind his reported targets.
Diego Costa
Integral to their push for the La Liga title, Atletico Madrid striker Costa has scored a goal every 106 minutes this season. In total, he has netted 21 times in 26 domestic fixtures, while he has also scored five goals in four Champions League fixtures. In domestic competition, Costa has a shot accuracy of 57% and a conversion rate of 28.4%.
The Brazil born forward, who has also been linked with Arsenal, has created 34 chances in La Liga – the third highest of any Atletico player. Of these, three went down as assists, while Costa has also completed 42 take ons and won 30 headed duels this season.
Radamel Falcao
A striker that Mourinho recently described as being “without a team,” Monaco forward Falcao has scored nine goals this season. These nine goals have come from 17 Ligue 1 fixtures, with the Columbian having featured in just three of the side’s last 11 games due to injury.
Despite relatively fewer goals than the other members of this list, Falcao has hit 60% of his shots on target. The former Atletico man has also completed 14 take ons, clocking up 0.91 successful take ons per 90 minutes played, and has recorded a pass accuracy of 85% this season.
Edinson Cavani
Despite having featured in 22 of Paris Saint-Germain’s 27 Ligue 1 games this season, Cavani is rumoured to be unhappy at having to play second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and may reportedly be available for a move, prompting interest from Chelsea and Manchester United.
The Uruguayan has scored 14 league goals this season, in addition to four Champions League strikes, and has also created 15 chances, although none of these have been converted.
Cavani has taken 68 shots in domestic competition this season, with a conversion rate of 25%. His shot total is the sixth highest in the league, although he has taken fewer than half as many as Ibrahimovic (133).
Antoine Griezmann
Real Sociedad winger Griezmann is another to have been linked with Arsenal as well as Chelsea, having scored 15 goals in 24 La Liga appearances this season. Still just 22, the Frenchman has already surpassed the ten goals he scored last season, posting a conversion rate of 23% since the start of the current campaign.
Griezmann has also created 24 chances for his teammates, the third highest of any Sociadad player in La Liga this season. The winger has also chipped in defensively with 24 interceptions and 34 tackles.
