Rumour: Newcastle courting Spanish winger Diego Capel

Diego Capel

Newcastle United are considering a move for Spanish winger Diego Capel who currently plays for Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon.

The Spanish international has been courted by Tottenham and Liverpool amongst others but it now looks that the Magpies have also joined the queue for the former Sevilla man.

The form of wide players like Jonas Gutierrez and Gabriel Obertan at the club has not been up to standard and the club have had to rely upon the likes of Moussa Sissoko and Yoan Gouffran to play on the wings. Sylvain Marveaux another one who can play as a winger has slipped down the pecking order, so a move for Capel would make a lot of sense for the Magpies.

Capel, 25 joined Sporting Lisbon in 2011 and since then has made 97 appearances for the capital club scoring 15 goals and providing 22 assists.

For any move to materialize, Newcastle would have to come up with an offer that the club who are leading their division can’t refuse after club president Bruno de Carvalho said this to any potential suitors.

“The club has decided that there will be no sales in January,

“The club is leading the division for the first time in nine years and we are determined to fight for the title.

“Only if a ridiculous offer is put in for a player will it be studied.”

It is understood that an offer of around £5million could be enough for a club who have had financial problems earlier this year and have sold stars like Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Tiago Illori and Stijn Schaars to balance the books.

A lot could also hinge on where the Magpies are placed come January to mount an assault on European places and the availability of other players, the likes of Wilfred Zaha of Manchester United and Paul Ince of Blackpool have both been linked with a move.
