Rumour: Premier League strugglers West Ham plan audacious bid for Arsenal outcast Thomas Vermaelen

Thomas Vermaelen of Arsenal takes part in a training session

According to sources, West Ham United are planning an outrageous bid for Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen this January transfer window in order to solve their defensive crisis.

The Belgian was a revelation when he arrived at the Emirates, however, has seen his form deteriorate rapidly since. Vermaelen has lost his place to Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker, who are now the favoured center back pairing of Arsene Wenger.

The defender, who started 25 games in the Premier League last season, has started only 4 games this season, much to his frustration. The left footer might need to consider a change of scenery if he is to keep his World Cup dream alive.

With Sam Allardyce admitting to the player’s quality, and the imminent possibility of bringing him to Upton Park, the deal might well be on. However, it remains to be seen if the 28-year moves to a club that is in danger of getting relegated.
