Real Madrid interested in signing 2022 FIFA World Cup winner with Argentina: Reports

Real Madrid are reportedly interested in snapping up Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cristian Romero. The 26-year-old was part of Argentina's victorious 2022 FIFA World Cup squad.

Romero is coming off a decent season with Tottenham Hotspur, scoring five times in 34 games across competitions. All five goals came in 33 games in the Premier League, where Ange Postecoglou's side finished fifth, two points off fourth-placed Aston Villa (68).

Despite being contracted to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium till 2027, Romero has attracted attention from Los Blancos. As per Albiceleste Talk (via Esteban Edul), the reigning Spanish and European champions have sent an enquiry for the Argentinian central defender.

Romero arrived from Atalanta in a reported deal worth £41 million in 2021. Despite the interest from Los Blancos, Spurs haven't yet responded.

In a recent interview by Ole (via Football London), the Argentine defender praised Postecoglou, hinting that he could stay on beyond the summer:

"The truth is that I’m fine. For now I’m not thinking about that (a transfer), I’m thinking about preparing myself these days to get to the national team in the best way possible, which is the next step I have.
"The things that come up at the moment are obviously always analysed but I’m not thinking about the future, I’m thinking about the national team. Now that I have the Copa America, I will always try to take the national team to the top and then we will see what happens."

Romeru is currently on international duty with Argentina, whose Copa America title defence begins against Canada on June 20 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Despite the reported interest from Real Madrid, Cristian Romero appears happy with life at Tottenham Hotspur as he reflected on a 'beautiful' recently concluded 2023-24 campaign.

After a bright start - where Spurs led the Premier League - they faded to miss out on a top-four place and qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League. Nevertheless, the Real Madrid target is seemingly looking forward to next season (as per Football London):

"I'm very happy to be in this present, even though group achievements haven't been the best or we didn’t expect to end like this, but also, at the group level for the coach’s first year, he has been good in all lines.
"We have to keep wanting more. Individually, I'm very happy for this beautiful season that I’ve had."

Romero is looking to win a fourth senior international title with Argentina and second at the Copa America.
