Real Madrid prioritising contract renewal of 29-year-old star ahead of 2024-25 season - Reports
Real Madrid are reportedly prioritising the contract renewal of left-back Ferland Mendy. The Frenchman is in action at Euro 2024, where Les Bleus take on Portugal in the quarter-final in Hamburg on Friday (July 5).
Mendy, 29, is coming off a decent 2023-24 season with Los Blancos, contributing a goal in 37 games across competitions as Los Blancos won three titles, including their second La Liga-UEFA Champions League double in three years.
With his contract expiring in 2025, Los Blancos are keen to ward off prospective suitors as they look to tie Mendy down to a new contract, as per MARCA (via Managing Madrid).
Carlo Ancelotti's side have been eyeing Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies for a while, but a transfer looks unlikely this summer. As a result, they are expected to keep hold of both Mendy and Fran Garcia for the new season.
Overall, Mendy has bagged six goals and 10 assists in 170 games across competitions for Los Blancos since arriving from Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyon in the summer of 2019. The Frenchman has won 10 titles at the Santiago Bernabeu, including three La Liga and two UEFA Champions League honours, among others.
A look at Real Madrid's 2023-24 season
Real Madrid are coming off a superb 2023-24 campaign, winning three titles, as mentioned above. They lost only twice all season, both to Athletico Madrid on the road.
One of those losses - a 3-1 reverse - came in La Liga, where they won a record-extending 36th title, ending their arch-rivals Barcelona's title defence. The other defeat - 4-2 in extra time - came in the Copa del Rey Round of 16.
Carlo Ancelotti's side also beat the Blaugrana in the Supercopa Espana final and were imperious in the UEFA Champions League. After topping the group stage with six wins, Los Blancos dethroned defending champions Manchester City on penalties in the quarter-finals.
They then scored twice late on in the semi-final second leg at the Bernabeu against Bayern Munich before beating Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the title match to win a record-extending 15th title.
