Serie A club closing in on deal to sign ex-Manchester United star David de Gea - Reports

Fiorentina are reportedly close to snapping up former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea. The Spaniard has been without a club since leaving United last summer as a free agent.

De Gea, 33, spent an illustrious 12-year stint at Old Trafford since arriving from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011. In 545 appearances across competitions, he kept 190 clean sheets.

In what turned out to be his last season at the club in 2022-23, the Spaniard registered an impressive 25 shutouts in 58 games across competitions. That included 17 clean sheets in 38 games in the Premier League, where Erik ten Hag's side finished third to return to the UEFA Champions League.

However, the Red Devils opted not to renew his contract despite the player's reported interest of remaining at the club by taking a pay-cut. A year later, though, De Gea is set to join Serie A side Fiorentina, as reported by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

The Spanish custodian is yet to confirm medical tests, but La Viola have reportedly agreed a one-year deal (with an option of another year), with De Gea set to earn €3 million annually in net salary.

The former Manchester United custodian has also kept 21 clean sheets in 45 games for Spain.

Manchester United take on Manchester City in the FA Community Shield at the Wembley in London on August 10. They beat City 2-1 in last season's FA Cup final to deny Pep Guardiola's side the chance to become the first English team to win back-to-back domestic doubles.

The Red Devils are coming off a mixed pre-season. After losing 1-0 at Rosenborg at the Lerkendol Stadium in Norway, they beat Rangers 2-0 at Murrayfield, Edinburgh.

Erik ten Hag's side then fell to a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in their first game of their US tour at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. United returned to winning ways with a 3-2 win over La Liga side Real Betis at the Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.

However, they ended their pre-season with a 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at the William-Brice Stadium in South Carolina.
