Rumour: Southampton target Arsenal goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski

Lukasz Fabianski

Lukasz Fabianksi is being lined up for a potential summer switch to Southampton when his contract with Arsenal expires in the summer, after his second set of penalty heroics of the season saw Arsenal into the FA Cup final, according to The Mirror.

Fabianski saved two penalties as Arsenal progressed in a shootout against Wigan Athletic in the semi-final at Wembley to follow up his penalty save in the 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich in the Champions League last month.

He has been used primarily as a cup ‘keeper for Arsenal this season and has been unhappy having to play second fiddle to compatriot Wojciech Szczesny at the Emirates this season.

His contract with the Gunners expires at the end of the season and he has made it clear he does not intend to renew, preferring to exit the club in search of first team football.

Should Southampton manage to lure him to the St Mary’s Stadium this summer however, he would face the familiar scenario of fighting for a first team place with a fellow Polish goalkeeper, with Artur Boruc currently being Mauricio Pochettino’s number one.

The Saints are unsatisfied with Paulo Gazzaniga as their back-up ‘keeper and want to add competition, with Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel also believed to be a target.

Lukasz Fabianski has made two Champions League appearances this season, making four saves including one from the spot against Bayern Munich.
