Salgaocar release Quinton Jacobs and sign Nigerian striker Obatola

Quinton Jacobs

Salgaocar have released former Namibia national team skipper Quinton Jacobs and signed up Nigerian striker Ojimi Gabriel ‘OJ’ Obatola, who becomes their third winter signing following the recruitments of former Singapore international John Wilkinson and ex Prayag United striker Josimar.

It has been a disappointing season for the 2010-11 champions with much of it down to the sudden departure of coach Karim Bencherifa, who was lured by Mohun Bagan’s lucrative offer.

In a bid to improve their campaign, the club management has now replaced all the three foreigners that they had signed at the start of the season, with former Australia U-20 World Cupper Sean Rooney and Philippines international Angel Guirado being released earlier already.

Confirming about the termination of his contract, Quinton on Thursday told Sportskeeda, “Yes I have been released today. Actually, things didn’t work out between me and the coach (David Booth) as he was using me as a striker which is not my actual position.”

Salgaocar are currently 10th with 11 points in 15 games and thus would be looking to improve their position in the table with their three new foreigners.

Obatola, who has had spells in USA, Singapore and Thailand, has already started training with his new teammates and played a practice match on Thursday. It remains to be seen whether he gets to make his debut on Sunday against Mohun Bagan.
