Scotland vs Switzerland Head-to-Head stats and numbers you need to know before Match 15 of UEFA Euro 2024

Scotland take on Switzerland in their second group-stage encounter at UEFA Euro 2024 on Wednesday.

Scotland were outclassed and outplayed by host nation Germany in Championship curtain-raiser as they suffered a 5-1 hammering at the hands of Julian Nagelsmann’s side last Friday.

Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz, Niclas Füllkrug and Emre Can all found the back of the net to hand Germany the biggest opening-day victory by a host nation in European Championship history.

This was Scotland’s second-heaviest defeat at a major tournament and head coach Steve Clarke will be rallying his experienced troops as they look to avoid another Euro heartbreak. Scotland suffered a group-stage exit from the tournament in 2021, when they picked up just one point from three matches to finish rock-bottom of Group D.

Next up for Scotland is the challenge of a spirited Switzerland side looking to replicate their 2021 run, when they stormed to the quarter-finals before narrowly losing to Spain on penalties.

The Swiss picked up a dream start to their 2024 European Championship campaign as they cruised to a 3-1 victory over Hungary at the RheinEnergieStadion last Saturday.

Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer scored first-half goals to put Switzerland in a comfortable lead. After Barnabás Varga pulled one back for Hungary in the 66th minute, Breel Embolo struck in the third minute of stoppage time to see off any late comeback scares.

Switzerland are currently on an impressive run of results, claiming seven wins and seven draws in their last 15 matches across all competitions since the start of 2023.

Switzerland have picked up five wins since their first encounter in May 1931, while the spoils have been shared on three different occasions.

The last meeting between Scotland and Switzerland came in a friendly back in March 2006, when the Swiss picked up a 3-1 victory courtesy of goals from Tranquillo Barnetta, Daniel Gygax and Ricardo Cabanas.

Scotland vs Switzerland: Numbers you need to know before their UEFA Euro 2024 encounter

This will be just the second-ever encounter between Scotland and Switzerland at a major tournament, with the Swiss securing a 1-0 victory when they met in the Euro 1996 group stages.

Scotland have won just six of their 33 matches at major tournaments, with only Bulgaria (four in 32) having a worse win ratio amongst European nations with 25+ matches.

Switzerland have never won the opening two matches of a major tournament and will be looking to break this trend at their 18th attempt on Wednesday.

Scott McTominay finished fifth in the scoring charts during the Euro qualifiers. The Manchester United midfielder has made 50 senior appearances for the Tartan Army since his debut in March 2018.

With four chances created against Hungary in last week’s group opener, Granit Xhaka is the second Swiss player to create 4+ open-play goal-scoring opportunities in a European Championship game, joining Steven Zuber who created five against Turkey in 2021.
