Should Liverpool target the play maker who scored in 55% of Ligue 1 games this season?

Remy Cabella, of Montpellier, has attracted some interest from around Europe with his glittering array of talents. One team closely following the Frenchman is Manchester United and he may be available for £15 million according to The Metro, but with Liverpool in desperate need of a midfield reinforcement, could Cabella be the answer to their problems?

Cabella has caught the eye of some of Europe’s top teams with his sublime skills, pace and ball control. He is a diminutive attacking midfielder with an eye for goal, quick feet and has the ability to produce moments of magic. The 23-year-old could be exactly what Brendan Rodgers needs.

If he is to sign him, he will face competition from fierce rivals Manchester United, after Montpellier manager Jean Fernandez told United they can have Cabella for £15 million.

Fernandez recently said that it will take a bid of £100m to convince them to sell Cabella, but speaking to Reuters, he gave a more precise figure.

‘If Manchester United offer €18 million [£15 million] in the winter transfer window as I have read, then he must go.’

In 9 Ligue 1 matches this season, Cabella has scored five goals – an impressive haul for a midfielder. Cabella is only two goals shy of leading scorer Falcao. He has an average shot accuracy of 50% having had 10 shots off and 10 shots on target. Judging from these figures, it is clear how often the French international gets forward; he is a real driving force, despite his stature.

He is Montpellier’s leading point scorer in Squawka’s Performance Score charts, having amassed a total of 319 points. He is 10th overall in Ligue 1 and second, just behind Mathieu Valbuena, in the midfielders chart. In terms of attacking figures, he has scored the fifth highest amount of points. That figure is made even more striking when you consider that Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Falcao are two of the players just ahead of him.

Cabella is, at nature, a more attacking midfielder so some would question whether he would be ideal for Liverpool considering who they already have as their primary playmaker. Philippe Coutinho is a sublime attacking talent so Rodgers would need to find a way to fit Cabella into a system that already has Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez as attackers. Could Cabella play in a deeper role? I’m not so sure, but he could possibly provide a driving force from deeper, allowing the likes of Coutinho to express himself in a free role ahead of the Frenchman.

Rémy Cabella Chances Created (Last Season)

Last season, Cabella provided eight assists, mainly in the area of the field just outside the penalty area – exactly where Coutinho would operate for Liverpool. If Cabella was to sign for Liverpool, Rodgers could change the system around to a 4-2-1-3 with Cabella in behind a front three of Coutinho, Sturridge and Suarez. However, Rodgers is keen to utilise Coutinho in the number 10 role so that may be unlikely.

Cabella is certainly a very talented young player, but whether he’d be ideal for Liverpool is questionable considering the attacking talent they already have. As a back-up for Coutinho, though, Rodgers may be tempted to sign this little magician.
